Position64 Support
Position64 turns chessboard images into editable positions for offline chess study. Recognition and engine analysis run locally; an internet connection may be needed for App Store purchases, restores, or optional external websites.
Start a new scan
- Open the Scan tab. Use the camera button to take a new photo, or choose Photos, Paste, or Files for an existing image. You can also share an image from another app to Scan with Position64.
- If a previous scan is open, use the camera button for a fresh camera scan, or the scan-source menu to choose another photo or file.
- Check that the detected crop contains exactly the playable 8 × 8 squares. Adjust the four corners if the crop is wrong.
- Review highlighted squares, then compare the whole board with the original image. A square without a warning can still be wrong.
- Confirm orientation, side to move, castling rights, and en-passant state before starting analysis. A picture alone cannot reveal all this information.
For best results, use a clear screenshot or flat printed diagram with every square visible. Reduce glare and keep the camera close to a top-down view. Unusual physical chess sets and low-angle photographs may need substantial correction.
Fix a position and explore a move
Tap a square to add, replace, or remove a piece. Use the review choices to resolve uncertain squares. If recognition missed a problem, choose the mismatch option in the full-board comparison. Confirm the pieces only when they match the photo.
The suggested move is shown on the board with an arrow from the starting square to the destination. You can play legal moves, undo or redo, and explore variations. A positive score favors White and a negative score favors Black; it is the engine’s estimate, not a guaranteed result.
Save useful positions in the local library. FEN stores a position; PGN exports explored moves. If you already have a FEN, enter it directly without scanning a photo.
Common questions
What is free, and what does Lifetime Pro unlock?
There are five free image recognitions, with the remaining allowance shown in the app. Lifetime Pro is a one-time, non-consumable App Store purchase that removes the image-recognition limit. There is no subscription. The purchase screen shows Apple’s current price in your region. Manual position entry and local analysis do not require a Pro purchase.
How do I restore Lifetime Pro?
Use the Apple Account that made the original purchase. Open Position64 Pro from Settings and choose Restore Purchases. Make sure you can connect to the App Store. Purchases awaiting Apple’s approval unlock after confirmation. If restoring fails, email support with the app version and the error message—never send your Apple Account password or payment-card details.
Why is Paste unavailable?
Copy an actual image or screenshot in the other app, rather than just its web address or text. Return to Position64 and tap Paste. If the source app only copies a link, save its image to Photos or Files and import it there instead.
What if the camera or photo import does not work?
For camera access, check Position64’s permission in iOS Settings. For Photos, select an image in the system picker and wait for it to load; an image stored only in iCloud may need a network connection to download. You can cancel and try another photo, or use Files. Camera capture cannot be tested in an iOS Simulator.
Why does the app keep asking me to review?
Recognition is not infallible. First confirm an uncertain crop, then check flagged squares, and finally confirm the whole board. Game-state confirmation is separate because side to move and move history cannot reliably be inferred from a static image. These checks prevent analysis of an unintended position.
What if the shared image does not appear?
Open Position64 once after installation, then try sharing one image again. If the main app has not opened, open it to continue the import. You can also save the image to Photos or Files and use the corresponding import option.
How do I stop slow analysis or reduce heat?
Stop the current search and use the default short analysis instead of a deeper search. Long engine searches use processor power and battery. Pause if the device becomes warm.
How do I remove a photo or saved position?
You can remove a retained source image while keeping the corrected position, or delete the saved entry from the library. iOS backups may retain copies according to your backup settings. Position64 has no developer-hosted account or cloud library. Read the privacy policy for details.
