Data collection

MorseScope does not transmit personal data, audio, camera frames, encoded messages, decoded text, usage analytics, identifiers, or diagnostics to the developer or to third parties.

Microphone access

Microphone access is optional and is requested only when you start live Morse decoding. Received audio is processed locally and retained only in a bounded in-memory buffer containing approximately the latest ten seconds. The buffer is continuously replaced and is discarded when listening stops.

The App Store version does not save or export live microphone audio.

Premium Decoder Pro can display a bounded ten-second live energy waterfall. Stopping may freeze that recent visual in memory until you tap Clear or begin another listening session. The waterfall is not saved in the Session Library, included in exported diagnostics, uploaded, or shared.

Camera access and light decoding (Version 2.3)

Camera access is optional and is requested only when you tap Start Camera in Decoder’s Light mode. Simply opening the mode does not start capture. The rear-camera preview helps you aim at one flashing light. MorseScope measures brightness in the selected region and processes the resulting timing on your device to infer Morse code and text. Camera frames are used only for live processing and preview; the app does not save, upload, or export images or video.

The optical text and Morse result are held in app memory only, independently of the audio Session Library. Stopping leaves the current result available for review or Copy. Clear removes it, and starting another camera session replaces it. Copy places only the current decoded text on the system clipboard; no camera frames are copied. The app does not automatically save optical results to the Session Library or another persistent store.

Camera decoding is a foreground activity. Capture stops when you tap Stop, leave Light mode or Decoder, background the app, or encounter a capture interruption. It also stops at the free-session limit or when thermal or frame-stream safeguards require it. Free Light Decoder sessions allow 30 seconds after the first light-signal lock. Initial aiming and calibration do not consume the allowance; after the first lock, elapsed capture time counts across gaps and reacquisition. Premium removes the commercial time limit but does not bypass these technical safeguards.

Imported and exported files

WAV, MP3, M4A, and AAC files you import are processed locally. Morse code and WAV or M4A files you export are written only to the location you choose. MorseScope does not upload or otherwise access those files after export.

Preferences and practice data

The app stores Encoder settings and local Practice data—including course progress, accuracy and response evidence, recent results, custom presets, and WPM-ladder progress—using Apple’s app-private storage. These preferences and practice records are not transmitted off-device.

Flashlight and haptics

Optional Encoder output can pulse the device’s rear flashlight or haptic hardware. Encoder flashlight output only changes the torch state; this output does not start camera capture or request camera permission. It is distinct from the optional Light Decoder camera processing described above. Screen, haptic, and flashlight output are generated locally and stop when you stop output, leave Encoder, or background the app.

Version 2.3 removes the app-imposed duration cap for Screen Flash and Flashlight for both Free and Premium users. Their maximum visible speed remains 7 WPM, and Haptics retains its 60-second limit.

Purchases

Optional MorseScope Premium purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store and StoreKit. The app reads Apple-signed product and entitlement information to display localized purchase options, unlock Premium, restore purchases, and reflect subscription status. The developer does not receive your payment-card details. Apple processes purchase information under Apple’s own privacy policy.

Network access and tracking

MorseScope's core encoding, decoding, and practice features work offline and do not use a developer-operated network service. A network connection may be required to load App Store product information, purchase or restore Premium, or manage a subscription. MorseScope does not track users across apps or websites.

Children’s privacy

Because MorseScope does not collect or transmit user data, it does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

If the app’s data practices change, this policy and the App Store privacy disclosure will be updated before the changed version is released.
